Tangalle
Tangalle, a sizable town in the Hambantota District of the Southern Province in Sri Lanka, is governed by an Urban Council. It is among the largest towns in the region and situated approximately 195 km (121 mi) south of Colombo and 35 km (22 mi) east of Matara. The town boasts a milder climate than the rest of the district and is known for its sandy beaches.
Tangalle is home to a significant fishing port, located on one of the biggest bays in Sri Lanka, which is shielded from the ocean by a reef. The town is a popular holiday destination and a hub for tourism on the south coast. The old Dutch fort in the town center now serves as a prison. Tangalle was an important anchorage for the Dutch and later the British on the southern coast of the island.
