Kasagala Rajamaha Viharaya at Weeraketiya

The Kasagala Rajamaha Viharaya is a historical Buddhist temple located in the Angunakolapalessa Pradeshiya Sabha area, approximately 9.6 km away from Ranna junction of Weeraketiya – Ranna road. According to historical records, the temple dates back to the time of King Devanampiyatissa (250-210 BC) who planted a sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi tree at the temple.

The temple features two medium-sized stupas, with one believed to have been built by King Devanampiyatissa and the other by King Saddhatissa (137-119 BC), brother of King Dutugemunu. The temple received royal patronage from many kings throughout history, including King Kavanthissa (200-160 BC) who built several buildings, later renovated by King Dappula I (659 AD) and King Vijayabahu I (1070-1110).
