Nagadeepa Rajamaha Viharaya

When we hear the name Nagadeepa Viharaya, we often think of the Nagadeepaya in Jaffna. However, there is an unexplored temple complex in the Uraniya village of the Badulla Bimtenni Korale in the Ridimaliyadda District Secretariat Division of the Badulla District, also known as Nagadeepa Viharaya, which is renowned for its mystical supernatural powers among the locals.

In November 2007, even President Mahinda Rajapaksha visited this site to make a vow to defeat the Tamil Terrorists who had been killing thousands of people for nearly 30 years. The ruins of this temple are located next to the Nagadeepa Reservoir in Rideemaliyadda. According to folklore, this area was once inhabited by the Naga (Cobra) tribe, hence the name Nagadeepa.

The Nagadeepa Tank, built in 1968, is the reservoir in Uraniya. As a result of this irrigation project, most of the Nagadeepa Temple land, along with all of its unexplored ruins, has been submerged under the water of Nagadeepa Wewa.
