Mahiyanganaya
According to legend, Mahiyanganaya was the location where the Buddha met a group of yakkhas (mythical spirits) and delivered a discourse to them, resulting in their conversion to Buddhism. It is said that the Mahiyangana Stupa, located in the town, was built on the spot where this event took place, making it one of the oldest stupas in Sri Lanka.
Mahiyanganaya is also believed to be the birthplace of King Dutugemunu, a renowned Sri Lankan king who defeated the Tamil king Elara and united the country. The town is also home to the Mahiyangana Raja Maha Vihara, a Buddhist temple that is believed to have been built in the 2nd century BC. The temple has many important relics, including a tooth relic of the Buddha and a hair relic of the Arhat Sariputta.
