Lahugala Kitulana National Park

Initially declared as a sanctuary on July 1st, 1966, Lahugala Park was later upgraded to a national park on October 1st, 1980. Despite being one of the smallest national parks in the country, it is a popular destination for those interested in observing elephants and birdwatching.

Within the park are three tanks, namely Lahugala (243ha), Kitulana, and Sengamuwa. These tanks are mostly silted up and support an abundance of Beru grass, which is a favorite food of elephants. The lakes also provide a habitat for a diverse array of bird species, both migratory and local.

As the park is situated in the dry zone, the terrain is generally flat with occasional boulder formations. The park is home to a variety of animals, including the endemic toque macaque, common languor, sloth bear, jackal, rusty spotted cat, fishing cat, leopard, wild bear, Indian muntjac, spotted deer, sambar, pangolin, and black-naped hare.
