Arugam Bay
Arugam Bay, located 312 km from Colombo, is known as one of the best surfing spots in Sri Lanka. After years of being inaccessible due to the operations of the LTTE terrorists, the area has now become a popular destination for surfers from around the world. In 2010 and 2011, the World Surf League hosted its international surf contest at Arugam Bay, attracting surfers from all over the world.
The bay is made up of three small villages, each with its unique history and culture. Ullae, a fishing village located at the corner of the bay, is predominantly Tamil and has both a Sinhalese and a Tamil school. Perie Ullae and Sinna Ullae are both mostly Muslim and have a mosque and a Muslim school. The closest town to Arugam Bay is Potuvil, another Muslim colony.
