Deepa Uyana ( Island Garden)

The Island Garden, known as Deepa Uyana or Dipuyyana in Pali, is located on the Promontory adjacent to the rest house. King Parakramabahu (1153 AD -1186 AD) chose this spot to construct a royal garden after completing his massive lake, Parakrama Samudraya. Later, King Nissankamalla (1187 AD - 1196 AD) developed a fondness for the Island Garden and built his palace here, along with several other structures such as his council chambers, ruins of which can still be seen today.

According to ancient Chronicles such as the Chulavamsa, the Island Garden was home to several remarkable structures, including the Dhavalaghara, a white house made entirely of stucco, the Vidyamandapa, a pavilion illustrating various branches of science, the Dolamandapa, a swing pavilion, and the Mayuramandapa, the peacock Pavilion, among others. It is possible that this garden complex was grander than King Parakramabahu's palace complex.
