Dambadeniya Kingdom and Palace Complex
The Indian invasions that occurred in the early 13th century caused Polonnaruwa to lose its status as the royal capital temporarily. As a result, the royal palaces were relocated to the northwest of the island for a century. However, Vijayabahu III (1232-36) fought against these invaders and eventually retreated to construct his palace atop Dambadeniya. The location was fortified and secured by a moat, marsh, and strong ramparts. Parakramabahu II, Vijayabahu's son, became king and ruled until 1270. He successfully defeated the Indian King Kalinga in a significant battle for control of the tooth relic. During Parakramabahu's reign, Dambadeniya reached its pinnacle, 30km southwest of Kurunegala, where the tooth relic was kept safe.
Although excavations have been limited at Dambadeniya, visitors can still observe the palace's remnants, the temple of the tooth, and six ponds that may have been used as bathing pools. Additionally, visitors can climb the rock to obtain a stunning view. A...
